The Fly Fishing Academy

The Only Fly Fishing School on the North Fork of the White River

When River Ridge Inn wanted to become more than just a premier fly fishing resort on the North Fork River, we questioned our guests as to what they would most like to see us provide. There were many different suggestions, but the one that stood out was one that we could see the majority of our guests use. A Fly Fishing School. Not just one that would teach beginning fly fishing, but one that would address the needs of fly fishermen beyond what was being taught at clubs, fishing outlets, and the back yards of avid fly fishermen.

Fly Fishing is as much of an art as it is a science. Either the basic principles can be learned out of a book, but, to become truly proficient, it takes years of experience and listening to those that have been there before you. Unless you have fishing access out your back door, are a fishing guide, are retired or independently wealthy, it is unlikely that you will find the time to develop the skills that most fly fishermen would love to have. Some flyfisher persons feel that they already have the skills necessary to satisfy their fishing hunger, while others can never get enough information and assistance to become all they can be in the sport of fly fishing.

Workshops

A lot went into planning for developing the Workshop Program. The concept provided for the instructions in all levels of expertise in the art of Fly Fishing and the science of it as well. The fit was a good one, but the execution left a lot to be desired. What we came to learn was that because of all the outstanding, experienced and dedicated fly fishing guides that our area is blessed with, in hindsight, it made more sense to provide more 1 on 1 instruction for the beginner with that of an accomplished guide, and more sharing of experience and knowledge from that guide to the more experienced fly fisherman and ladies. This sharing is done at the same cost it would have been using the Workshops as the source of new knowledge and experience. It also afforded more opportunities to learn while immediately applying it to catching fish. That is what it is all about anyway. Again, this could not be done without having guides that are among the best fly fishing instructors in America. So, call us and we will be happy to "hook you up" with one of these professionals for a day or two of learning "fish-catching" on the fly.

Teaching Children to Fly Fish

River Ridge Inn in Norfork, AR, encourages you to read this article in hopes that it will aid in getting children to return to the outdoors. I cannot begin to tell you of the number of kids that have stayed at the Inn, with their parents, for the purpose of fishing Dry Run Creek. It is the "jewel of trout fishing streams" for kids under 16 years of age. We have many highly qualified and experienced guides to introduce you and your children to the sport of fly fishing. Please consider giving Captain Jim Smith a call at 870-499-7775 and discuss the accommodations and the experience of taking your children to the awesome adventure of learning to fly fish for trout at Dry Run Creek. Arguably, it is the parents that have the most fun watching their kids battling the big trout in The Creek.

Our thanks to Jon Sutton and the Ben Team at Outdoor Empire for their contributions.
